Information About Motorcycle Accidents for Residents of the Gulf Coast and Georgia
A motorcycle accident can occur at any moment you’re riding down a road. With the reduced size of the motorcycle comes a reduction in visibility of the vehicle and the driver. This turns routine situations such as a car turning right at a stop sign into a situation with potentially dire circumstances.
Risks of Riding a Motorcycle
As previously mentioned, not being visible to other drivers on the road is the main risk motorcycle riders face. At the intersection with the stop sign, there are at least two potential factors for the car driver not being able to see the motorcycle before making the turn. One such reason is that an object such as a tree or a parked car has obscured the driver’s vision. Another reason is that the motorcycle was not in the driver’s eyesight when they checked the street before making the turn and entered the field of vision too late for the driver to react. This is why many neighborhoods that see a lot of motorcycle action insist that drivers look twice before making their turns or crossing the intersection.
Other risks to motorcycles include road hazards such as debris. Motorcycles riders are also at risk because of the lack of safety features available on a motorcycle. There are no airbags, seatbelts, bumpers, or any buffers in between the rider and the point of impact. Couple that with the high degree of difficulty it takes to operate a motorcycle and the lower stability of the bike, and you’ll find the danger of a serious injury is always present.
Because of the risky nature of motorcycles compared to cars, there are some additional safety precautions riders should look into as a means of protecting themselves if they are involved in an accident.
The most important safety precaution a motorcyclist can invest in is a helmet. In fact, according to estimates by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, helmets help reduce motorcycle crash fatalities by 37 percent. Unhelmeted riders are also three times more likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury as a result of a motorcycle crash than those helmeted. Helmets are so important to the health and safety of motorcycle riders that states have developed laws that mandate which riders must wear helmets. Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama laws dictate that all motorcycle riders are required to wear a helmet, though Florida laws only require those 20 years old and younger to wear one.
An Anti-lock braking system (ABS) has also proven to be an effective measure in increasing motorcycle safety. An ABS prevents the wheels of a motorcycle from locking up. Whereas on a car a brake lockup usually results in the car skidding, the typical result of a brake lockup on a motorcycle is falling off the motorcycle. These systems reduce fatal crashes by 31 percent when compared to cycles without them equipped.
Choosing a safer motorcycle also helps prevent serious injuries as a result of an accident. Riders of supersport motorcycles such as Suzukis and Kawasakis have a death rate of up to four times as high as riders of cruisers and standards. This is because a combination of the lightweight design and high-speed engine allows these bikes to reach speeds of upwards of 160 miles per hour in a manner of seconds.
Though it is important to take all these safety precautions into consideration when you ride a motorcycle, accidents can still occur no matter how safe you are.
Aftermath: What to Do After Experiencing a Motorcycle Accident
The most important thing to do after you have been involved in a motorcycle accident is to make sure that you are safe. Get yourself to a secure location and check to see if you have suffered any major injuries. If you find you have an injury, and you have the ability, call 911 and report the accident while requesting medical assistance. If you are not able to call 911, or you cannot move from the accident site, try to stay calm and understand that the police and medical attention will arrive shortly.
If after you have moved to the secure site, have examined yourself for injuries, and have called 911, it is important for your case to start collecting information. Write down all relevant information regarding those involved in the accident such as the license plate numbers of the vehicles involved, each person’s contact information, the insurance policy numbers for both insurances, and the make and model of the vehicles. Also, find the witnesses of the accident and ask them for their names, their contact information, and whether or not they would be willing to testify about what they saw. You will also want to write down your account of what happened in the accident as well as go around and take pictures of the accident scene. Relevant pictures include any skid marks on the road, the damage done to both vehicles, and any road signs in the immediate vicinity. You’ll also want to accurately record the exact location of the accident.
