HONORS & AWARDS
- All Conference Baseball Selection 1997
Attending Spring Hill College, Daniel gravitated towards the technical fields, with an interest in Computer Networking and Systems Design. He also continued his baseball career, where he played right field and earned an All-Conference Award in 1997. Daniel graduated from Spring Hill College in 2000 and began his career in the Technology field.
Daniel tried his hand with several different disciplines in the IT field, but never felt the true passion for his chosen path that he had felt while competing in athletics. During this time, however, Daniel met and married Julie Toifel of Mobile, Alabama, and they agreed that he should follow a long discussed dream of his. With the support of his wife and following a desire he had during his time at Spring Hill, he chose to take the LSAT and enroll at the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. During this time, Daniel continued in his Systems Administrator role with G.A. West and Company and attended law school at night in Montgomery, Alabama. This required a two and a half hour drive to and from Montgomery 3 nights a week for 4 years. During this time, he also studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria with McGeorge University, where he studied Comparative Constitutional Law and studied under Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. He returned from the semester abroad and graduated from law school in May of 2009.
After graduating law school, Daniel was hired as the general counsel for G.A. West & Company. While there he acted as Sole General Counsel and Human Resources Director for a $150 million corporation with more than 1,100 employees at 20 job sites in a 6 state region. He also directed a staff of 4 employees and was directly involved in employment benefit offerings, including participating in organizing a self-insurance plan for health insurance for all of our employees. During his time at G.A. West, in the Spring of 2012, Daniel and Julie welcomed their first child, Harper Grace to their family. Daniel continued to manage and coordinate delivery of corporate-level functions and activities related to human resources, including compensation, benefits administration, diversity and EEO / FLSA issues, and training and development of personnel. Daniel also was the sole oversight for the company’s numerous active litigation files, actively participating in depositions, discovery and settlement hearings. After nearly 5 years in the role of General Counsel, Daniel pursued a different path in the legal field, he became a solo practitioner.
Opening his own practice in the fall of 2013, Daniel continued in his field of expertise as counsel for several local real estate companies, advising on landlord/tenant issues, lease agreements, etc. He also continued in the worker’s compensation field, which he was quite familiar with from his time at G.A. West. It was in this field that he became associated with the Alexander Shunarrah Gulf Coast, LLP. Forging an ongoing bond with the managing partner, James T. Laura, Daniel was able to help injured workers gain the benefits they were due and help Alexander Shunarrah Gulf Coast, grow their worker’s compensation practice. In the Fall of 2014, Daniel was approached by Mr. Laura to become an Of Counsel member of the firm, an opportunity he eagerly accepted. Daniel looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship with not just Jay Laura, but the entire Alexander Shunarrah family.
